King's Cage

 10/22/23

I got the audiobook of this book in MP3 player form. It's something that is convenient to me because I don't have to kill my phone or fight with my computer while playing video games and someone interrupts me. The only downside is that if I pause it long enough the device shuts off. Anyway we finished the second book with Mare getting captured. But is it really being captured if she willingly gave herself up? Either way the book so far is her being prisoner and how they are treating her. That is as far as I got. I'm only on chapter three or four and not much is going on. I feel like this book is just going to be a filler before the last book. Tone down the action to save it for the grand finale. I do enjoy this series so far, but to be honest, I wouldn't keep it on my bookshelf. I get the appeal of it but I might be too mature for this series. Mature as in too old. I'm not the target audience and I'm okay with that. Either way I'm still curious about how this book is going to play out. I'm wondering how Mare is going to get out of her captivity and get back to those she cares deeply about. Wish me luck on this one.

I have no idea how far I am in the book. But all I can say that Mare is free from her cage, but the war has not been won. Mavin is determined to get her back. Also as much as some action takes place, this book is still a filler. I'm sure the last book is going to keep me on the edge of my seat. Cal is still determined to save his brother from what his mother has done. Mare hates him for keeping her as a prisoner. I don't know what else to say that won't ruin the series. The surprises that it holds. It gets harder the farther I go into the series. As far as I know there are only four books. Which means I am almost done with the series. I can't say that I'm sad about but I also can't say that I'm happy about it either. I feel just kind of meh. But I can say that the farther I go in this series, the more I don't like Mare. I feel like her character isn't really growing. Not after all of the stuff she has been through. She still feels like the same whiney teen girl in the first book, she is just complaining about a different thing in each book so far. Cal is kind of growing and Mavin just can't grow because he is broken by his mother. In all honesty, no one is really growing in this series. Everyone is still the same since the first book. At least in my opinion. I'm just curious on how this series is going to end. But first we have to finish this book that is a little bit on the boring side.

I actually finished this book about a week ago but I just didn't have the motivation to write a post. Sorry about that. Anyways, the book defiantly felt like a filler. At least until the very end where the Scarlet Guard tried to keep control of one of the cities they were able to take over. Sadly I don't remember how it ended. I might have fallen asleep at that time because I was listening to the audiobook before bed. I'm sure the last book will explain a little bit of what I missed. Right? Anyway with the book being a filler, it only got two stars from me. The last battle at the end of the book couldn't help it. Yes, there is another big battle in about the middle when Mare escapes her prison but that is about it. Also I'm still kind of being salty about the "strong" main female character set to change the world trope. I would like to have an actual strong female character that grows throughout the books. So far, I don't see any difference to Mare since the beginning.
