The Book Thief

 3/2/23

I don't waste time to open another book. If I remember correctly, this book became a movie. If I am correct, I do plan on watching the movie after finishing this book. Just to compare. Maybe I will even make a post about it and what I thought. But as always, I'm going into this book blind. I just know that it is a historical fiction book. That is it. I think it also takes place in Germany during World War 2 but I could be wrong. I'm trying to go off of memory here on all of the books turned into movies I've seen trailers for. I also know that this book has been on my TBR list for a long time. It's about time that it finally gets a chance to finally be read. I don't have any expectations on this book. So far I've been getting a lot of okay books. The only way a book is going to be more than okay is if it makes me tear up, can't put it down, or makes me feel connected to the characters. It's a hard scale to be more than three stars. So low expectations going into this book. Also there are some to see how it was good enough to be a movie. We all know I'm still struggling through a book that doesn't meet my expectations for that.

Well I guess I know now why I don't normally read historical fiction books. It is the focus on all of the historical events taking place during the timeline of the book. Just reading about those historical events makes me feel like I'm reading textbooks in high school all over again. They kind of bore me. Anyway, The Book Thief is an interesting read. The book is told in the point of view of a grim reaper. The grim reaper grew interested in the book thief after they had collected her brother's soul. I should warn you that I won't be saying many names because I don't know how to spell them without looking them up and I'm too lazy to look up the names. Anyways the book follows our book thief during the time of world war two in Germany. Its nice to read a book like these because it give the point of view of what life was like living in Germany during Hitler's reign. It shows that even though you may not agree with something, you will still follow rules just to survive. Also it shows that life during the war wasn't that great over in Germany. Our book thief was stuck eating pea soup for days while her best friend was eating less because their house had seven mouths to feed instead of three. You are also probably wondering why the book thief is called that and it is because she stole a book that was dropped after her brother was buried. The second book she stole was from a pile of burned products and the book was too wet to catch on fire. So she saved it before it met a fate in flames. She was also gifted some books which made her book collection grow. But I might not end up liking this book and I won't end up hating it. It's just not my type of book.

Well I finished the book. I'm kind of glad I had the audiobook for this one. It was long and full of history. I feel like I learned so much about a small part of Germany during World War 2. How most people were just trying to live normal lives while also trying to survive. We get to experience the time where The Book Thief's family repays a debt that was owed after World War 1. We get to experience the whole town looking for shelters in case of an air raid taking place. We also experience the fact that the Book Thief experiences something she never thought to imagine. I almost teared up at that part but I didn't . I couldn't help but feel bad for her at that part. But I'm sure there was a reason, like she was able to tell her story about that time on Himmel Street. If you like historical fiction books, this is a good book for you. But if you are like me and like history but not enough to read a fiction about it, then this might not be the book for you. The book is good and interesting, it just isn't for me. I like action and fantasy I guess. But this is all to discover my new reading style after taking a long hiatus. On to the next book.
